Structure of Human Language
Investigates word formation processes (morphology) and sentence structure (syntax) in the world's languages. Focuses on vocabulary and tools used to discover and describe patterns in human language. Coursework emphasizes problem solving and working with a wide range of language data.
Native Languages of Florida+
Detailed overview of various indigenous languages of Florida and the United States Southeast, focusing especially on phonology, morphology, and syntax.
Phonology I
Phonemics, syllabic and prosodic phenomena, neutralization, distinctive features, morphophonemic alternation, phonological systems and processes. Terminology and notational conventions of generative phonology and optimality theory, with problems from a variety of languages.

Chinese Martial Arts Fiction
Overview of Chinese martial arts fiction from earliest times to the present day. Discusses the literary pleasure of watching violence, the relationship between violence and the law, gender ambiguity of woman warriors, the imperial and (trans)national order of martial arts narrative, and the moral and physical economy of vengeance.
Premodern Chinese Medicine
Surveys a selection of classical approaches to the study of the body before analyzing and comparing several common literary, philosophical, medical (TCM), mantic, religious, and political representations of the human body in different eras of premodern Chinese culture.

Dream of the Red Chamber
Explores the intellectual and social life of traditional China through the 18th century epic novel, Story of the Stone. Also studies interpretive theories of the novel, both Chinese and Western.
Fourth Year Chinese I
Introduces and analyzes the documentary prose style used in Chinese newspapers and media. By studying a variety of short texts students develop skill in listening, speaking, reading and writing about issues commonly encountered in Chinese newspaper editorials and in television news programs, debate roundtables, or TV documentaries.
